Glaciarium, the Museum of Ice in Pataognia See map

El Calafate have a new tourist attraction and a novelty for our country. This is the first museum of ice in Argentina that will be located across Lake Argentino, in the way to Perito Moreno Glacier.

The project idea is to enrich, enhance and nurture the stay of more than 350,000 tourists that come every year to visit the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier including Los Glaciares National Park. It seeks to provide scientific and technical information on glacier to tourists through a visual and educational experience, so as to learn and know more about glaciers and entertaining art form, with exhibits including interactions and scenic effects, lighting and sound .

From the front to the smallest detail give you the feeling of being inside a glacier. In the distance, outside Glaciarium can be confused with a glacier nestled quietly in the desert because of their irregular shapes, with angles that look like cuts and cracks in the walls of a block of ice. Furthermore, inside the spacious rooms nourished backlight, touch screen, giants plasma tvs, maps, models and audios to help create a glacial environment.

First stage was built 2,500 m2 of the museum which opened in January 2011. It has an access and parking area, a central hall where the are the box office, confectionery, the GlacioBar which is 10 degrees Celsius below zero located in the basement and the library, and 3 pavilions linked by circulation connectors. Two of which are divided into themed areas and the third has an auditorium for 120 people with three-dimensional projections in high definition.

glaciarum salasIn the halls of the museum you can learn about the history of glaciers, the formation of snow and ice and the flora and fauna of the region.

In a second stage, the project involves the construction of a Paleontology Hall in which will be tell the story of life in the region by 1000 m2 of exhibition, a laboratory area, cabinets and other agencies for the development of scientific research.

The tour

The start of the tour is the room "From snow to ice," then passed by "History of the Planet" and "The glaciers in the world." You can also learn the anatomy of a glacier through models and interactive, there is a recreation of Francisco Moreno's studio and an impressive tunnel, "Five minutes before the end," which shows the world's environmental problems. Finally, you can see a 3D movie in the auditorium by Peter Lang, who appreciate the aerial views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the Fitz Roy and Torre hills, among other mountains.
