El cajón del Azul, an unforgettable view See map

Visitors of El Bolsón often mention 3 or 4 unforgettable features of the journey: home-made beer, the hippie fair, the peace of the town and the protection of the Piltriquitrón hill. But there is a place that stand above all others who made the trip: El Cajón del Río Azul.

As is a reserve area is prohibited to enter with cars or motorcycles, you can only access walking or riding a hourse with a guide who accompanies the tour.

The walk is long lasting 3 to 4 hours depending on pace to take, and there are many hills, but the reward is worth reaching. During the walk crosses an arm of Azul River by a suspension bridge, a valley and at the end of the journey will come to another valley where is located the famous Cajón del Azul. It's a canyon of 1 meter wide and 40 deep. If you look down you can see de Azul river running and you will know clearly why the river's name.

On the western side you can see the native forests, because of its inaccessibility, remains as the pioneers discovered it.

The tour can be done in the day, but if you tempt more than a few hours of peace, there is a place for camping and where you can get craft beer, homemade bread and meals. Another alternative is to sleep in the barn but it is recommended to bring sleeping bag.

From there you can return or go to other shelters in the area like Hielo Azul which is so called because near the refuge is a glacier. This is a more difficult hike, with lots of climb that requires a great effort, but the senses are rewarded when you arrive.
