Valle de los Altares, canyons in Patagonia See map

Valle de los Altares is 300 kilometers from Esquel. It is also known as the Valley of the Ruins. This is a canyon formed by rocks of arsenic called "Clastres" with red stripes that form patterns due to erosion and corrosion of water and wind.

Its strange rock formations simulating altars and natural totem resembles a Jurassic landscape ideal for walking and photographic safaris.

Near this valley there is a patagonic rock art site. There you can see a painting made in the tenth century with mineral pigments and organic matter. You can also find objects used by the Tehuelches, the ancient inhabitants of these lands.

Arriving Los Altares there is a gas station which has a motel. There is also a campground with fireplaces and bathrooms.

From Esquel must take the National Route 40 to Tecka, turn onto Provincial Route No. 62 to Pampa de Agnia and the junction with National Route No. 25 about 56 kilometers above the margin of the Chubut River.
